Description[]

The Night Vision Goggles are a newly added item, it is turned on by equipping it in the inventory and turned off with the Lighter Key. (L by default) They are found on the outside. (updated in v1.0)

Appearance[]

The Night Vision Goggles has the appearance of a pair of grey binoculars with a mount at the top, designed to be attached to a military helmet. There are no straps attached to the goggles, it is unknown how they are attached to the players head. Despite being battery powered there doesn't appear to be any buttons to toggle the night vision on or off.

Usage[]

The Night Vision Goggles are an alternative tool for the Lighter and Flashlight. Similarly to the flashlight, it uses batteries to be powered, automatically replacing them the moment it runs out of charge. The goggles last 10 minutes in total (each bar represents 1 minute and 15 seconds).

The major benefit of the goggles is their extended viewable range in comparison to the flashlight, making them ideal for overworld (night) building, fighting, and hand gliding. The caveat to this is the green blurred static filter it has, making identifying items and crates in the world difficult, potentially even at point blank range. The goggles also limit your peripheral vision, and staying around bright lights in the dark (such as fires) can blind you.

In small, dark, enclosed environments (such as caves), it is better to use the flashlight, as most things will be within range of the beam of light and you will get a clear picture. The goggles are best used when exploring above ground at night, where you can see further into the darkness that the flashlight can't reach.

You will be blinded by the goggles in broad daylight, making them unusable during the day, and despite having your hands free and being able to use the GPS Tracker while wearing them, the screen will be blank and unreadable. They are also usable while underwater and while wearing the Rebreather, however the light emitted from the Rebreather can still blind you.

Fundamentally, the Flashlight is a better alternative to the Night Vision Goggles. The green filter obscures and makes things hard to make out, even items and enemies directly in front of you. You are incapable of using it while there is a bright light source nearby, and although it frees your offhand there isn't an item in the game (with the exception of reloading ranged weapons and bows, which have access to a flashlight attachment anyway), which requires both hands. The only reason for your off hand to be free is to use your GPS Tracker (which you cannot read with the goggles on), lighting a Molotov (which blinds you because of the light it creates), or throwing explosives (which only take half a second to arm).

Location[]

The Night Vision Goggles are found in a campsite in the southern part of the map close to the maintenance B bunker.
