The Caterpillar is a mutant enemy found in Sons of the Forest.

Appearance and Behavior[]

These mutants look similar to a long tube of flesh with a torso on either end. In the middle of the two halves, there is a single pair of defined, muscular buttocks.

They move in a acrobatic locomotion throwing one torso over the other like a conjoined front handspring. But they also crawl on the ground fast and shake like a snake, making bone-creaking noises as they do so. These mutants are also known to be extremely dangerous and hostile towards the player, leaving no mercy and instantly going for the attack when the player comes into view. Despite their awkward anatomy, Caterpillars are amongst the fastest enemies of the game, being able to relentlessly keep up with a sprinting player. Ranged weapons are strongly recommended, as it is also capable of powerful and wide-ranged attacks. The Shotgun seems to be by far the most effective weapon against Caterpillars, especially since they are large targets with predictable movement patterns. Alternatively they can be stunned with the Stun gun or Stun baton and then killed with a melee weapon as they tend to show up on their own.

It does not seem to have allegiance with either the cave-dwelling or surface-dwelling cannibals as it will unapologetically fight both groups with no regard.

These mutants also appear to have the ability to phase through structures, making it difficult to find a safe place, unless you are in a multi-story building.

Story (Spoiler Warning)[]

Almost nothing is known about the story of this mutant. However, it can be seen in the banquet hall though its nameplate is missing or under it.

It is entirely possible that the mutant found dead in the dining hall is a fused version of two individuals, as each half can be seen in/on a chair, while the Twins at the other end of the table could be a single, split individual.
